The Saugus Cafe traces its roots in Santa Clarita to 1888 when the Saugus Train Station was built with a diner inside. In fact, the diner operations — public eating space and bar, kitchen, pantry, and upstairs hotel rooms — occupied more than half the train station building until 1916, when the Southern Pacific Railroad needed more room for its own operations and the cafe moved across the highway. From that point forward, the Saugus Cafe evolved through multiple buildings, owners, and eras, reflecting the growth of the Santa Clarita Valley itself. As rail traffic declined and automobile travel increased, the cafe transitioned from a train station eating house into a roadside destination, serving locals, travelers, and generations of families who came to regard it as a community fixture. Today, it is recognized as the oldest operating restaurant in Los Angeles County. 00:00 Saugus Cafe origins: dining by train in the 1890s 01:39 At the Saugus Train Station with Leon Worden 02:25 Inside the depot: where Tolfree Eating House once stood 03:29 Why the cafe moved across the street in 1916 04:35 Mapping the original dining room and bar layout 05:37 World War I and Southern Pacific railroad expansion 06:30 Coffee break at the Saugus Cafe 07:03 Railroads arrive in Saugus, 1876–1888 08:48 Tolfree family and the first station restaurant 10:23 Ore Bercaw and the growth of the town of Saugus 13:26 Woods family ownership and early cafe locations 14:29 Judge Clarence MacDougall and cafe ownership changes 17:59 Jerry Reynolds and writing Saugus history 21:09 Did U.S. presidents really eat at the Saugus Cafe? 23:39 Movie stars, filmmakers, and Hollywood connections 25:42 Highway Patrol filmed outside the Saugus Cafe 27:06 The Saugus Cafe today: oldest restaurant in LA County This video follows the documented history of the Saugus Cafe from its origins at the train depot through its later incarnations, separating what can be proven from what has been repeated over time. Using photographs, maps, and contemporary records, it places the cafe in its proper historical context while acknowledging the powerful role memory and tradition play in how places like this are remembered. Rather than carrying forward urban legends, this history centers on what the record shows: where the cafe was located, how it functioned, why it moved, and how it became one of Santa Clarita's most enduring and recognizable establishments. #scvhistory #sauguscafe #southernpacific #santaclaritavalley 👉 If you enjoy this video, please like 👍, share with friends & community, and subscribe for more stories from the Santa Clarita Valley’s past. 👉 FOLLOW US ON SOCIALS ✔ Instagram - / santaclaritahistorycenter ✔ Facebook - / scvhistorybuffs ✔ Threads - https://www.threads.com/@santaclarita... 👉 EXPLORE THE SCVHISTORY ARCHIVE ✔ SCVHistory.com - https://scvhistory.com/ Video: January 2026
