A brief history of the S.S. Laurentic, and her cargo of gold bullion The S.S. Laurentic was launched in Belfast in 1908 and was built by Harland and Wolff. She was completed on the 15th April 1909 and handed over to her owners The White Star Line. Her maiden voyage was on the 29th April 1909. She had been operating a successful passenger service between Liverpool (England) and Quebec (Canada). She also played an important role in the capture of the notorious murderer, Dr Crippen in July 1910. At the outbreak of the first world war she was commissioned by the Royal Navy. En route to Canada she hit two German mines at the mouth of Lough Swilly. Co Donegal. She was carrying about 43 tons of gold ingots. After hitting the mines and within an hour she was lieing on the sea bed. Of the 475 passengers and crew on board, only 121 survived. In the following years she was extensively salvaged by the Royal Navy to retrieve the gold ingots. All of the gold was recovered except for 22 ingots which remain on the sea bed to this very day in a depth of about 150ft. This is only the beginning of the Donegal Gold Bar Story.
