From Heaven to Hell An orchestral requiem inspired by true events Composed, written, and orchestrated by Yazan Al Hajari (2019) Recorded with the Budapest Scoring Orchestra (2021) Vocals by Lynsey Tibbs and Jacob Khalil In memory of Alan Kurdi and all the children lost at sea. This orchestral song tells the story of Alan Kurdi — the little boy whose image shook the world after he drowned in the Mediterranean Sea while fleeing war with his family. Through music and voice, this piece mourns his tragedy and the countless other children and families whose stories were never heard. May this music stand as a reminder: behind every headline lies a human life, a dream, and a broken story. Lyrics (written by Yazan Al Hajari) This is a story of a little poor boy Who never did anything wrong. He thought the water was his big toy, He played but didn’t live long. The boy, with his parents and older brother, Wanted to have a chance to live free. They rode a rubber boat to dream of a new land Across the Mediterranean Sea. A strong wave came and flapped over the boat, He couldn’t swim and wore a fake life coat. His name was Alan, his age was two, His body had washed up along the shore view. No tongue can tell, To spell his farewell, When Alan drowned in the sea. Gods that fell, From heaven to hell, Were blind and failed to see. The father went back when fate saved his life, To bury his children and their mother—dead wife. He filled the ocean with his salty tears, In a matter of an hour, he grew a hundred years. They will talk about ’em but won’t offer a hand, It’s the image they’re after, do you understand? Cold was the sea, lonesome was the shore, Why wasn’t God watching anymore? Alan was the only one that they can see, But another three thousand had drowned in the sea. When your prayers are not answered, it's time to yell, To Shoot the sky, make the clouds bleed and swell.” No tongue can tell, To spell his farewell, When Alan drowned in the sea. Gods that fell, From heaven to hell, Were blind and failed to see. (© Yazan Al Hajari — All rights reserved)
