Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla (57 BC – 935 AD). It flourished as the capital and political and cultural center until its downfall by Goryeo in 935. Because Silla placed great importance on Buddhism, there are many Buddhist ruins here, and Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto are registered as World Heritage Sites and attract many tourists. There are many ruins scattered throughout the city, and the Gyeongju Historic Area is registered as a World Heritage Site. Daereungwon Tomb Complex It is a large group of ancient tombs from the Silla Dynasty that is now a tomb park. The park is home to 23 ancient tombs, including seven royal tombs. The most famous is Cheonmachong Tomb, and there is an entrance fee. Its name comes from the discovery of a painting of a horse rising into the heavens during excavations in the 1970s. It is the only tomb in Daereungwon that is open to the public, and replicas of its main grave goods are on display. Cheomseongdae is the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in Asia, and possibly even the world. It was constructed during the Silla period, during the reign of Queen Seondeok (r. 632–647 AD). Cheomseongdae was designated as the country's 31st national treasure on December 20, 1962. It is part of Gyeongju Historic Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cheomseongdae stands 9.17 meters high and consists of three parts: a stylobate, or base upon which a column is constructed, a curved cylindrical body, and a square top. Midway up the body stands a square window and entrance to the inside of the structure. When viewed from above, Cheomseongdae resembles the Korean Hanja character 井 (정; jeong; 'well'). The square stylobate base is 5.7 meters wide and built from a single layer of 12 rectangular stones. From the base to the window, the tower is filled with earth and rubble. The number and placement of the stones in Cheomseongdae have been theorized to represent various historical and astronomical figures. The central hole or window separates the body into 12 layers of stones both above and below, symbolizing the 12 months in a year and the 24 solar terms.
