Global Programme for the Control & Eradication of Peste des petits ruminants

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a fast spreading viral disease that affects and kills sheep and goats. Therefore, this disease has severe negative socio-economic impacts on the income of livestock farmers and, in particular, the livelihoods and food security of the most vulnerable rural communities. Indeed, every year, PPR takes a devastating toll on 300 million of the world’s poorest rural families, who depend on sheep and goats for their livelihoods. The OIE and the FAO, in their joint strategy for the control and eradication of PPR by 2030, have set a global eradication programme: by working together to sustain political involvement and ensure financial investment, we can eliminate this dreadful disease, while contributing to strengthen Veterinary Services across the globe.
