In most patients, the definitive treatment for poorly controlled chronic acid reflux known as GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease or GERD is minimally invasive surgery. If the patient has a hiatal hernia, where the stomach pushes through the hiatus and into the chest cavity, we reduce the stomach tissue back into the abdomen and the defect is sutured closed. To manage the reflux, patients may be suited to a fundoplication, which wraps the upper part of the stomach around the lower part of the esophagus to augment and enhance a weak Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). More recently, a magnetic LES augmentation device known as LINX - a small implant placed during a 15 minute procedure was introduced to offer a less invasive option with shorter recovery. Of note, a paraesophageal hernia is almost always repaired using a Nissen Fundoplication (full wrap of the esophagus).
