Trust more women with leadership positions, MP says. Siaya member of the national assembly, Dr. Christine Ombaka is challenging Kenyans to trust more women with leadership positions for the country to make strides in gender parity. According to Dr. Ombaka, the few women elected to represent Kenyans in parliament have over the years proved that they jealously guard the interests of the common man hence the need to have more of them in different elective positions. Speaking at Nyawara in Gem constituency when she distributed seeds and fertilizer to the farmers, Ombaka gave an example of the controversial finance bill that drew ire from Kenyans, saying that all elected women parliamentarians from Nyanza rejected it in parliament. “Look at what happened in 2023 / 2024 during the controversial finance bill that was to hurt wananchi in terms of high taxes that would have seen the public pay mor for fuel, sugar, school fees and many more” she said adding “A lot of us women parliamentarians voted No. She said that women leadership must never be wished away and asked Kenyans to cherish and support it. Dr. Ombaka appealed to Siaya residents to emulate other regions that have trusted more women with elective positions. “The world is moving towards entrusting more women with opportunities to lead and I am asking Siaya people to give women a chance in leadership” she said. The woman representative who is also the national government affirmative action fund (NGAAF) patron challenged local residents to form and register self-help groups in order to benefit from the fund’s support. Siaya NGAAF coordinator, Nancy Okademi said that the fund will support 600 farmers from all the six constituencies with fertiliser and maize seeds during this planting season. Okademi said the aim of the support was to fight food insecurity and urged the beneficiaries to ensure that they use the support to improve their lives. A beneficiary, Rhodah Adhiambo Otieno hailed the office of the woman representative and the NGAAF for the support, saying that the cost of inputs was way beyond an ordinary farmer.
