The meter on Canon’s Cinema EOS cameras, works subtly differently from their photo cameras. In this video, I dive into how metering functions on the Canon EOS R5C and what makes it unique compared to the hybrid EOS R and DSLR systems. I start by looking at the user interface. This includes where the meter, or exposure bar, is; when it’s visible; how to hide and show it; and finally how to read it and what information it shows. After looking at the UI, I dig into the details on how the meter itself works. Unlike the Canon’s hybrid cameras, which use a sophisticated “intelligent” metering system that considers subject and scene composition, the cinema EOS cameras use simple center weighted averaging. Even with their subject detection capabilities they don’t factor subject position into the metering consideration. Finally, I look at the 3 modes the Cinema EOS meter can operate in; standard, backlight and spotlight.
