In Sikhism,a langar (Punjabi: ਲੰਗਰ, 'kitchen'[) is the community kitchen of a gurdwara, which serves meals to all free of charge, regardless of religion, caste, gender, economic status, or ethnicity. People sit on the floor and eat together, and the kitchen is maintained and serviced by Sikh community volunteers. The meals served at a langar are always lacto-vegetarian. The langar (or free kitchen) was introduced by Guru Nanak , who was the founder of Sikhism and the first Guru, because of his belief in the oneness of humanity . He offered free meals to everyone, regardless of their caste , gender or wealth. It was a place where everyone gathered and ate together. It is said that when Guru Nanak was a boy, his father gave him Rs 20 and sent him to buy goods, sell them and return with some profit. However, on the way, he met some hungry sadhus (Hindu holy men). He used the Rs 20 to arrange food for them. He made them sit on the floor and served the food with his own hands.
