The Vijaya Vittala Temple in Hampi is one of the most admired monuments of the Vijayanagara period. It is dedicated to Vittala, a form of Krishna, and is known for its detailed stone work and large temple complex. The most famous part of the temple is the stone chariot in the courtyard. It is carved from granite and shaped like a ceremonial vehicle drawn by elephants. It is often seen as a symbol of Hampi. The main hall, known for its musical pillars, is another highlight. Each pillar is actually a cluster of shafts that produce different tones when tapped. The hall is covered with carvings that show scenes from mythology, musicians, dancers, gods and animals. The complex also includes several shrines, mandapas and gateways. The quality of the architecture shows how advanced the builders of Vijayanagara were in both skill and design.
