Two days kayak fishing the Florida Keys backcountry. This film documents our first days on the water behind Cudjoe Key — exploring shallow flats, mangroves, and narrow channels that most boats can’t reach. It was also Kristen’s first year fishing and her first time kayak fishing the ocean, so every fish and every lesson became part of the story. The trip opens with a barracuda ripping drag and settles into some of the calmest, clearest conditions I’ve ever seen in the Keys. Day one stayed close to home — a simple shakedown. Day two felt like fishing an aquarium: crystal-clear water, endless bait, and life everywhere. Over the two days we ran into: • Aggressive barracuda in skinny water • Lane snapper and mangrove snapper • Jacks, turtles, pufferfish, and constant movement on the flats This was my first time running an electric kayak in the backcountry, and it changed how we explored the area — pushing against tide and current to reach tucked-away water that simply isn’t accessible otherwise. This is a 24-minute long-form kayak fishing film — not a highlight reel — from the first launch to the last casts at sunset. If you enjoy real fishing, first-time experiences, and exploring new water from a kayak, welcome to At Water Level. Filmed in the Florida Keys backcountry near Cudjoe Key.
