Who was Huangdi (黃帝) — the Yellow Emperor? Was he a legendary tribal leader who united the ancient tribes of the Yellow River valley? A culture hero credited with the foundations of Chinese civilisation? Or a cosmic deity associated with the centre of the universe? In this video, we explore the many layers of Huangdi, one of the most important figures in Chinese tradition. He is remembered as the first of the Five Emperors, a sage ruler whose victory over Chiyou (蚩尤) symbolised the triumph of civilisation over chaos. Yet Huangdi also appears in another tradition: the Wufang Shangdi (五方上帝), the Five Directional Supreme Deities of Chinese cosmology, where he represents the Yellow Emperor of the Centre. How did these two traditions come together? By the time of the Han Dynasty, the Huangdi of mythic history and the Huangdi of cosmology had merged into a single figure — a ruler who was both the ancestor of the Huaxia (華夏) people and a cosmic force representing balance and centrality in the universe.
