The February 8, 2026 Sunday service at Unitarian Universalist Santa Fe centered on the theme of resilience, explored through the sacred nature of the written word. Reverend Gail Lindsay Mariner opened the service by framing religious traditions as "great storehouses of wisdom" that provide essential hints on how to move forward during difficult times. She emphasized that resilience is often found in the quiet language of the body and the beauty that fills us up to respond to challenges with love. The guest speaker, Rabbi Hefker Deutsch, introduced the concept of the "House of Wisdom," a religious institution centered on a "book sanctuary" where browsing and reading in community provide a reserve of resilience. Drawing from his idiosyncratic background, he challenged traditional notions of "chosenness," arguing that it is only the self-chosen who light the weight of humanity by electing to live through shared values like justice and equity. A central pillar of the Rabbi’s message was that wisdom is "Hefker"—a Talmudic term meaning unowned and public, much like water or wind. He posited that: *. True teachers are perpetual students who remain lit by the spark of curiosity. Transformation is an asymptotic affair: we are never perfect or complete, but the pursuit of meaning is the most divine act possible. *. Books are portals to "moments of being," serving as an "archive of longings" that replenish our memory with numinous certainty. Rabbi Deutsch envisioned a sanctuary where browsing is akin to prayer—an offering of time and attention that replaces the search for easy answers with the courage to ask more beautiful questions. Supporting this vision, Reverend Gail led a contemplative meditation where congregants opened books placed on their chairs to find random phrases of consolation. The service concluded with a reminder from the UUA that no congregation navigates these "impossible times" alone, but rather within an interdependent web of mutual support.
