In 1997, Scottish scientists announced the birth of Dolly the sheep. The first mammal cloned from a differentiated adult cell, Dolly represented a significant technological breakthrough. But in many ways, the public’s reaction to Dolly—fear, revulsion, and the assumption that classical biological reproduction may soon be rendered obsolete—had a greater impact than the scientific achievement itself. This talk, which Adam has given at numerous colleges, scientific conferences, and science cafes, will use Dolly as a lens through which to examine the way the public views science and scientists. How, especially in our current times, can we ensure the public is reacting to actual science, and not just what they think the science is? Adam Ruben is a writer, comedian, TV host, and molecular biologist. He has appeared on the Food Network's Food Detectives, the Science Channel's Head Rush and Outrageous Acts of Science, the Weather Channel's Weather Gone Viral, the Travel Channel's Mysteries at the Kremlin, Netflix's The Mortified Guide, Discovery's Superhuman Science and Inventions That Changed History, and currently hosts What on Earth? and Ancient Unexplained Files on the Science Channel, as well as writing for the Emmy-nominated cartoon Elinor Wonders Why on PBS Kids. Adam writes a monthly humor column in the journal Science Careers and is the author of two books: Surviving Your Stupid, Stupid Decision to Go to Grad School and Pinball Wizards: Jackpots, Drains, and the Cult of the Silver Ball.
