SUPPE REQUIEM IN D MINOR (1855) BBC R3 Broadcast 28 August 1986 Wendy Eathorne, soprano Penelope Walker, contralto Ramon Remedios, tenor David Thomas, bass Royal Choral Society, chorus-master John Alley BBC Concert Orchestra, conductor Vilem Tausky The composer of all those overtures which provide a rousing start to any concert composed a great deal of religious music. He invested Viennese operetta with a distinctively Italianate, operatic tinge, his musical heritage coming as much as anything through his mentor Donizetti, so it’s not surprising that his Requiem should be in the tradition of Mozart through Donizetti to Verdi. Suppe composed the work in 1855 in memory of Franz Pokorny, the theatre manager for whom he composed his early theatrical music. The work gradually fell out of favour, and this BBC broadcast was apparently the first since 1901.
