In 1778 the American colonies had already been a battlefield for three years. With France entering the war on the side of the rebels, the conflict changed scale dramatically: for Great Britain a new global front opened, and above all the entire British army in America risked isolation. If the French fleet had managed to gain control of the western Atlantic, British forces—scattered among several bases and protected only by an inadequate naval screen—might have been overwhelmed. The danger was real, imminent, and underestimated by many. That this scenario did not come to pass was due in large part to the actions of Admiral Richard Howe. Tired, disillusioned by the conflict, and already close to returning home, Howe nevertheless rendered one last, decisive service to Great Britain in America. This video tells the story of that great naval campaign of 1778. Enjoy the video! Note: this video is an experiment, and every feedback is especially appreciated!
