What was supposed to be a relaxing 2-night kayak trip from Macon to Knowles Landing turned into a paddle on a flooding river. The mid-June rains hit harder than expected, turning the Ocmulgee into a flooding mess. After one heavy raining night we paddled on, but could not find a dry, safe place to camp. We realized our 2 night trip became 1. The adventure didn't end there. When we finally reached Knowles Landing, we found the parking lot underwater and the exit gate locked tight. We had to call the Fire Department to get out! LEARNING FROM A BIG MISTAKE: We also learned a hard lesson about hydration. Even with a filter, drinking from a flooding river is a bad move (too much sediment, bacteria and runoff). A couple weeks on anti-parasite and antibiotics and a 10lb weight loss... Lesson learned With all of that. We learn and move on. Its about staying active and getting outdoors. Keep going on adventures.
