The Battle of Stalingrad began in the summer of 1942, when German forces launched a major offensive toward the Volga River, aiming to seize the industrial city of Stalingrad. Initially, the Luftwaffe bombarded the city heavily, reducing much of it to rubble but failing to break Soviet resistance. As German troops pushed into the outskirts, fierce street fighting erupted—soldiers battled house to house, room to room, in what became one of the most brutal urban conflicts of the war. Despite being pushed back to narrow pockets along the river, Soviet defenders held on, buying time for reinforcements and setting the stage for the massive counteroffensive that would later encircle the German 6th Army.
