Malcolm Brannen was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1946. He started playing the violin at age 9, and was tutored by teachers affiliated with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and then attended Florida State University, following two of his instructors who began teaching there. He received a draft notice immediately upon graduating in 1968, and was encouraged by a friend to try to enter the service as a musician. He auditioned with the Navy, and was immediately recruited to serve in the Navy Band, and then assigned to a newly formed string quartet. The quartet performed at events sponsored by the Navy and the White House, and also toured the country. After his discharge in 1972, he went on to a career as a music instructor and youth group coordinator with the Grand Rapids Public Schools and Grand Rapids Community College.
