Evolution of India's First Smart Village | Gautam Karajgi | TEDxBandra

Gautam Karajgi is passionate about technology and its innovative applications for upliftment of the downtrodden in rural India. He is now turning his passion for technology and rich entrepreneurial and operations management experience into vocation of transforming Indian villages. Gautam Karajgi is a mechanical engineer and has a post graduate diploma in management. He is a board member in one of the leading India non-profit organisation (Maharogi Sewa Samiti, Warora) and heads the Anandwan Smart village initiative. Anandwan (forest of joy) was established as a hamlet in 1949 to rehabilitate people suffering from leprosy and other disabilities by internationally renowned social activist and entrepreneur – Murlidhar Devidas Amte (Baba Amte). What started as a hamlet to provide shelter to hundreds of underprivileged souls who were disowned by their families, friends and society soon become a model village providing quality life to thousands of its residents (mostly leprosy survivors and people with disabilities) and providing medical aid, education, training and empowerment to millions in the region. Anandwan has now embarked on the journey to become India’s first smart village encompassing all aspects of human development and serve as a blue print for developing villages across India and world. Gautam Karajgi has over 15 years consulting, entrepreneurial and operations management experience in the corporate sector. Before his transition to social sector, he was heading a company that was instrumental in setting up and running an innovative milk procurement and supply platform across villages in southern India that aims to benefit more than 100’000 dairy farmers through innovative and sustainable dairy management practices. He is also credited with the setting up India’s largest citrus fruit processing plant at Nanded, Maharashtra, offering high quality Indian citrus fruit concentrate to leading international juice brands and providing market access to more than 10’000 citrus farmers. As a consultant in McKinsey & Company India, Gautam served some of leading industrial houses in South Asia helping them to drive operational efficiency and reduce carbon footprint. Gautam started his career as Senior Engineer in Kirloskar Oil Engines and worked in the shop floor and manufacturing engineering department before being nominated as core member in the dream project team under the leadership of the Chairman and given the mandate to design and setup state of the art engine manufacturing plant in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
