A song of love lost and recovered from the early days of the 20th century, "Ka Makani Ka`ili Aloha was composed by Matthew Kane. It has become one of the classics of the Hawaiian music repertoire, with great versions by Gabby Pahinui, his son Cyril, by Ledward both solo and with Hui Ohana, and by Led's mom, Tina Kaapana, among many many others. My arrangement is certainly influenced most by Led's vocal version. Shooting video here by Enchanted Lake in Kailua is rewarding but definitely has a frustrating component as well. The clouds that add so much drama to the sky also pass overhead and change the light from bright to muted and back again within moments. This clip was shot on one of those fortunate occasions when the light stayed consistent for the whole four minutes or so, and I'm grateful. I'm playing the Martin OM-18V that lives in Hawai`i, tuned for this arrangement to a C wahine tuning, that is, a tuning with a major 7 note included. Wahine tunings are prominent in Hawaiian slack key although I do occasionally find them in other fingerstyle genre. This tuning has several names including Leonard's C because it was used prominently by Leonard Kwan. Another name is "drop C" because this tuning is closely related to taropatch open G. From taropatch we simply drop the lowed D string down another whole step to C giving us a whole new approach to the fretboard. So the tuning in this piece is C G D G B D from low pitch to high. I'm still learning how to get the best from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k but I think I'm making progress. The switch to the high resolution recording format in the Lumix GH5 is coming along as well and I've had some good luck finding excellent tutorials on the DaVinci Resolve software, so things are moving along on the technical side.
