Before Ordination, Highest Practice in the World Testimony of a Seon Master 출가 전인데 세계 최고 수행자 태명혜우스님에게 한 선방수좌의 증언 〈태명혜우스님 출가수행기 노래〉 The Ordination Journey of Monk Taemyung Hyewoo — 사바세계 오신 생불 용화미륵부처님을 만나기까지 — Verse 1 — 어머니를 잃은 아이 Verse 1 — A Child Who Lost His Mother 어머니가 떠난 그날부터 Since the day my mother left, 나는 매일 절을 찾았네 I visited the temple every day. 처음 가는 길이었지만 Though it was my first time going there, 꿈속의 절은 고향처럼 느껴졌네 The temple in my dreams felt like my hometown. Verse 2 — 결혼 앞의 물음 Verse 2 — In Front of the Question of Marriage 친구들은 하나둘 가정을 이루고 One by one, my friends started families. 나는 다시 스스로에게 물었네 I asked myself again, 이 길이 맞는가 “Is this the right path?” 나는 어디로 가야 하는가 “Where should I go?” Verse 3 — 하늘의 음성 Verse 3 — The Voice of Heaven 그때 내 마음 깊은 곳에서 Then deep within my heart, 천지를 가르는 음성이 울렸네 A voice that divides heaven and earth resounded. “아니다, 스님이 되어라 “No—become a monk, 중생을 모두 구하라!” Save all living beings!” Verse 4 — 서원의 시작 Verse 4 — The Beginning of the Vow 하늘의 벌이 두려워 In fear of heaven’s judgment, 조계사로 달려가 I ran to Jogyesa Temple. 석가모니 부처님 앞에 무릎 꿇고 Kneeling before Shakyamuni Buddha, 진리를 펼치겠노라 맹세했네 I swore to spread the truth. Verse 5 — 해인사로 가는 길 Verse 5 — On the Way to Haeinsa Temple 범어사, 통도사, 해인사를 지나며 I visited Beomeosa, Tongdosa, and Haeinsa. 어제 다녀온 듯 익숙했고 They felt familiar, as if I had been there yesterday. 밤하늘 별 아래 계곡에 앉아 Sitting in the valley under the stars, 절에서 흘러나오는 빛을 바라보았네 I gazed at the light flowing from the temple. Verse 6 — 인연의 스님 Verse 6 — The Monk of Destiny 햇빛을 가르며 스님 한 분 지나가시다 A monk glided by in the sunlight, 내게 다가와 말씀하셨네 And came close, saying, “아기 보살아, 춥지? “Baby Bodhisattva, you are cold. 내 방에서 따뜻이 쉬거라.” Rest warmly in my room.” Verse 7 — 선방과 중생의 놀람 Verse 7 — Surprised Seonbang, Surprised Living Beings 선방의 스님들이 놀라 말했네 The Seonbang leaders exclaimed in surprise, “스님 방에 여자가 있다!” “There’s a woman in the monk’s room!” 그러자 그 스님이 말했네 Then the monk replied, “이 아이는 장차 스님이 될 보살이다.” “This baby Bodhisattva is one who will become a monk.” Verse 8 — 깨달은 스님의 찬탄 Verse 8 — Praise from the Awakened Monk 눈을 감고 앉아 계시던 큰스님 A high monk sat with eyes closed, 눈을 뜨며 말씀하셨네 And upon awakening said, “이 아기 보살은 “This baby Bodhisattva is 온 세상에서 가장 깊은 부처님의 제자다.” the most profound disciple of the Buddha in the whole world.” Verse 9 — 샘처럼 솟는 결심 Verse 9 — Determination Like a Spring 스님을 기다리며 마루에 앉아 있으니 As I sat waiting on the floor, 몸이 샘처럼 튀어 오르며 My body bounced like a spring, “해인사 어느 암자든 가서 “Go to any hermitage in Haeinsa 머리를 깎아라!” 외치고 싶었네 and shave your head!” I wanted to shout. Verse 10 — 담장 위의 시선 Verse 10 — The Monk’s Gaze on the Wall “안양으로 가 출가하겠습니다.” “I will go to Anyang and become a monk.” 내 말에 스님은 고개를 저으셨네 The monk replied with concern, “그곳엔 무당이 있다, 가지 마라.” “There’s a shaman there—don’t go.” 그러나 나는 떠났고 Still, I set off, 스님은 기와 담장 위에서 And the monk watched me 끝까지 나를 바라보셨네 From the tiled wall—until the end. Verse 11 — 부처님의 시선 Verse 11 — The Buddha’s Gaze 집으로 돌아온 그날 When I returned home, 석가모니 부처님이 나타나 Shakyamuni Buddha appeared. 스님들과 걷다 뒤돌아보시며 Walking with monks, He turned and looked at me, 그 시선에 빨려들어가 I was drawn into His gaze. “늦었다, 서둘러 출가하라.” “It’s too late—hurry and become a monk.” Verse 12 — 칠보의 인도 Verse 12 — Guidance of the Seven Jewels 방 안에서 좌선하니 When I sat meditating in my room, 칠보가 가득 차올랐네 The Seven Jewels filled the space. 그때는 몰랐네 I did not know then, 그 빛이 미륵부처님의 빛임을 That light was the light of Maitreya Buddha. Verse 13 — 출가의 길 Verse 13 — On the Path of Becoming a Monk 그 길에서 나는 출가하였고 On that path, I became a monk, 석가모니 부처님의 인도를 따랐네 Following the guidance of Shakyamuni Buddha. 모든 인연은 이미 정해졌고 All relationships had already been decided. 이 몸은 중생의 빛이 되리라 This body shall now become the light of sentient beings.
