There’s nothing quite like Mainline Steam—especially in the fall. This year, I was lucky enough to chase two Mainline Steam excursions. In July, I headed out West to see Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 leading a trip between Cheyenne and Denver. Then, in October, I went South to film Norfolk & Western No. 611 running once again on the Buckingham Branch/Virginia Scenic Railway. After a two-year absence, 611 made its long-awaited return to the Virginia Scenic Railway in 2023. These popular excursions took a break in 2024, but returned in the fall of 2025. From the last weekend in September through the end of October, Mainline Steam was back in Virginia. This year’s excursions were unique—they were operated in partnership with the Steam Railroading Institute, whose coaches and Diesel No. 57 traveled all the way from Michigan. Another change was that the trains no longer ran all the way to the Staunton Amtrak Station; instead, they stopped at the siding at Lagrange, only going to the Amtrak Station on the Saturday afternoon excursion. Despite these changes, the experience remained the same—classic mainline running, with speeds reaching 40 mph. I returned for the final full weekend in October—just past peak fall foliage—spending all three days filming 611. A cold snap the week before had brought down many of the leaves just as the colors peaked, but the scenery was still stunning. The former Chesapeake & Ohio mainline remains one of the most beautiful places to film trains, especially in autumn. Join me as I chase 611 over three days along the mountain grades between Goshen and Staunton, including the climb over North Mountain through Virginia’s colorful Mountains. Each morning started cool; Friday warmed into a sunny afternoon, while Saturday and Sunday stayed cloudy. The weekend mostly went smoothly, though Sunday morning brought a mechanical issue shortly after departure, causing a two-hour delay and a return to Goshen. The crew worked tirelessly, and by just before 4 p.m., the 2:30 train finally departed—611 back in the lead. Also featured in my trip were Amtrak’s Cardinal on Friday and a CSX freight on Saturday. So join me trackside down South as we follow the Queen of Steam doing what she was built to do—haul mainline excursions through the brilliant fall landscape. Grab some popcorn—this is one of my favorite videos yet! She was one of 13 J Class 4-8-4 Steam locomotives that would operate on the railroad in passenger service before being retired in 1959. She was the only one of her class saved, due to the efforts of O. Winston Link. In 1982 it was restored for the Norfolk Southern Steam Program, and would operate across the country from 1982 to 1994. It would come to my area a few times. It was featured on my favorite show growing up, Shining Time Station. It was retired in 1994 at the end of the program, and would sit at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. In 2015 it was restored for the 21st Century Steam Program. From 2015-2017 she would operate for the program before it ended again. I would chase the locomotive on the Cavalier excursion in 2017. In 2018 everything was up in the air due to Amtrak's new Policies about these trips. In 2019, it would go to the Strasburg Railroad for A Reunion of Steam with former running mate, Norfolk & Western 475 for a series of events in 2019. Between 2019-2023, it would mostly operate between Strasburg and the NCTM. After returning home a new opportunity opened up for 611, and it would operate in the fall of 2023 on the Virginia Scenic Railway/Buckingham Branch for a series of Mainline Excursions, dubbed the Shenandoah Valley Limited. While these did not happen in 2024, they would return in 2025. I would travel with @DroppedSignal to Staunton, and we would chase with @MiddleTennesseeRailProductions & Bison Rail Photography. We would also run into @Djcman331 @DynamoProductions-trains @LanesTrains @consolidationproductions @TheBigBananaRailfan @railfanningwithtydan@kilroy_was_here1 @smokymountainmedia @ConnecticutRailFilms @ProRailProductions @ZJKFilms @SouthernKansasRailfan @ILG611 Last minute, it was mentioned to me that #1702 would not be operating when I planned on going. After verifying, I sadly decided to wait a day to leave. It would operate, but there is next year! Anyhow, there is only one more Fall Trip for me, and that will be this week with #630 & #4501 on 630's last operation before its 1472 day! Still figuring out Christmas trains, but if you did like, please give my video a like and subscribe for more steam train videos! #steam #virginia #appalachians #appalachianfolklore #shenandoahvalley #611 #fall #fallfoliage #trainspotting #trains #polarexpress #csx #amtrak #steamtrain #steamengine #south #roanoke #vmt
