Terrorism expert Daniel Byman: Understanding the Islamic State

One of the foremost authorities on Middle East security and terrorism, Daniel Byman, discusses the history of the Islamic State, why it proved successful, its many recent setbacks, and ways to fight it more effectively. Byman is the research director and senior fellow for the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at The Brookings Institution. He is a professor at Georgetown University at the Walsh School of Foreign Service. As a professional staff member, he served on the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks on the United States (the “9/11 Commission”) and on the Joint 9/11 Inquiry, U.S. House and Senate Intelligence Committees. His talk is co-sponsored by Peace and Conflict Studies and the McFarland Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture.
