Produced and Directed by Christopher Beaver: • Tales of the San Joaquin River — The Valle... Tulare – Land Without Stones features archaeologist, Jerry N. Hopkins and biologist, Rob Hansen. As we enter The Central Valley of California, a region about the Size of England, we will find only Sand and Clay Beneath Our Feet There are no naturally occurring rocks in the Valley, not a single stone. Anything larger than a grain of sand was brought here by a human hand. Every Rock and Every Stone in the Valley carries the weight of history and has a story to tell. To discover more about the stones to be found, we will enter a Southern Region of the Valley—a vast expanse of what was once, until around 1910, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River, water as far as the eye could see, the lake that became known as The Phantom Lake. We will be exploring the now-dry ancient shorelines of the lake, where water washed against sandy beaches more than thirteen thousand years ago.
