The 1993 playoffs was probably Gretzky's last great shining moment as a legendary star. His glory days in Edmonton were not so far behind him that we could not see the flashes of brilliance that made Gretzky "The Great One", although from the moment he left Edmonton and joined Los Angeles it became immediately apparent that a big part of Gretzky's brilliance was the team around him in Edmonton which collectively gave him the room and opportunities to maximize his talent. That magic blend would not be recaptured in Los Angeles, St.Louis, and not even in the Big Apple, although we saw other managers trying desperately to rebuild what Gretzky had in Edmonton but by the time players like Kurri and Anderson and other Oiler greats were added too much time had passed, because it was not only the mix of players but it was the perfect time of having all those players together, and it ism unfortunate Gretzky was moved while still in his prime because had the Oilers been able to keep that team together, which did win a cup without Wayne, one can only marvel at the thought of what legendary feats might have been. 6 or 7 consecutive Stanley Cups would have been entirely possible. The Big Apple was Gretzky's last chance to shine in the preeminent American market with more money than any other team at their disposal, and where he made one of his last big requests, namely, that the Russian Rocket Pavel Bure be added to the Ranger's lineup (Bure was having personality conflicts with Vancouver Canuck management at that time and Gretzky had a sense that a deal could be struck, and he had a hunch that he and Bure could have made magic together on the ice, and they probably could have, as Bure, despite a major knee injury, was still at the top of his game (although over the next few years his knees would go the way of Bobby Orr, to the point he was having trouble walking and managers (in a rare display of compassion) had to tell him "quit before you end up in a wheel chair" (was it Bure's Teen Idol good looks that made them treat him better?). Bure is a frequently underappreciated generational talent, his explosive speed and skill has not really been seen since in the NHL as Bure in many ways was a genetic anomaly spawned from the loins of his Olympic champion father who trained him almost from birth to become what he was. No player in NHL history had more 0 to 60 explosive speed and power (the power to move at top speed with defenders clutching at him and not being bumped off the puck) or ability to bring a crowd to its feet at any time. Gretzky thought it would be a great way to end his career, by throwing perfect passes to the Rocket and then just sitting back and watching Pavel do his magic. But it was not to be. By the time a hobbled Pavel Bure limped into the Ranger's office looking for one last chance in 2002, Gretzky had already decided to make 1999 .. 99 the year of his retirement. But of all Gretzky's time away from Edmonton, the 1993 playoffs was probably Gretzky's brightest last moment. So without further adieu I give you: Game 6, 1993 Los Angels Kings vs Pavel Bure and the Vancouver Canucks (who would achieve greatness in 1994 in what remains one of the most amazing Stanley Cup runs in NHL history). Enjoy.
