Design Journeys through Organisations: Systemic design tools for leadership

Since Jones and Van Ael published the book Design Journeys through Complex Systems new systemic design tools have been developed for complex activity modelling, organisational development, and strategy making. The book’s systemic design methodology provides a number of methods that support organisational design and management, which are considered a necessary complement to designing systems “external” to companies and institutions. Any organisation is a social system and can be designed for its own self-organising to meet the demands of complex missions. Related workshops have revealed an increasing interest in systemic design approaches to support leadership and complex management decisions. Experimental tools and methods have been trialled in design leadership workshops, and due to the lack of focus on this emerging area at RSD Symposia, the authors believed this to be a potential area of underserved but generally applicable interest among practitioners. In the Design Journeys session, the co-authors focus on assessing prototype canvases and gaining working feedback on new tool designs. They provide a training overview and facilitate the exploration of several of the new tools in a context designed to simulate organisational functions. The Design Journeys methodology is applied to creative organisational activities, including evolutionary service innovation, system value proposition, and system change roadmapping.
