I made this on the 3rd of October, 2019 -- The day I assumed was the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin wall (which actually happened a month later). Damn, I suck at dates. Originally, this song was composed by Joseph Haydn as a birthday song for the then Holy Roman (and later solely Austrian) emperor Franz II. It was used as the anthem of the Habsburg Empire subsequently until 1922. It was also Haydn's personal favourite, and probably the last he played before his death. Later, the melody was combined with the popular 19th century German poem "Lied der Deutschen" by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben to form the German national anthem in 1929. Today, only the third stanza is sung. A popular misconception is that the first two stanzas are illegal -- in fact, all three stanzas still form the national anthem, but singing the first one is frowned upon because it has been misinterpreted and abused by the Nazis, and the second one because it's weird (I personally like it though). Original title: Variations on Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser / Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit National anthem of: Germany, the Habsburg Empire Composer: Joseph Haydn Date of morshification: 03-10-2019 Midi (probably) obtained from kunstderfuge.com (I think? Gee, It's been three years!).
