Our Lindy By The Sea student team came in 2nd out of 14 teams at the 2018 Camp Hollywood (attended by 1500 dancers from 26 countries). It was so exciting for me, as we never imagined we could place higher than 5th or 4th (at the most). The reason being, is that we don’t have auditions, and we accept anyone who wants to be on the team. This year we had 32 students, ranging in age from 18-63, and dance experience from 2 months to several years. With the level constraint, we have as our focus creating a super fun and zany routine that all the dancers can do. This time one of our students, Tim Farrell, brought us the children’s song by Rafi, “Banaphone.” Perfect! Well, after the judges had been watching 10 student teams one after another, when we came out like a bunch of banshees and then did this super fun number… it was one of those moments that just becomes a “did you see that?!” “were you there?!” moments. You can actually see the judges doubling over in laughter. My students worked for five solid months, meeting once a week for two hours: Learning how to perform, learning how to dance in and out of formations, and learning the choreography as we created it (my teaching partner, Ron Campbell, and I collaborated).
