Our demo farmer, Dan Boerst, planted green into standing rye, then rolled the rye to terminate it. Using a roller crimper flattens the cover crop and crimps their stems, stopping their growth. The terminated crop remains on the ground until it naturally breaks down, providing continuous soil cover. Keeping the soil covered helps reduce erosion, regulate soil temperatures and moisture, provides habitat for soil biology, and provides non-chemical weed suppression. By the end of harvest, some of the mat will have been naturally incorporated into the soil by the living organisms there, enough to allow planting of the next rye cover crop. That rye will overwinter and be terminated in the same way next spring. In this way, we can maximize soil cover throughout the year. Dan had great success with his corn planted green. In this video, see his planting process plus how the crops and vegetation mat progressed throughout the season.
