From the Texas panhandle to the heart of New Mexico, this stretch of the journey was packed with surprises, scenery, and a few accidental adventures. After checking out the iconic Cadillac Ranch and making a stop at the official Route 66 Midpoint, I rolled into Tucumcari—only to find the heat cranked to 81 degrees and most of the town closed for Veterans Day. So, I kept cruising west, following one of the historic splits in old Route 66 and winding my way toward Santa Fe… but called it a night in the other Las Vegas—Las Vegas, New Mexico. The next morning’s drive into Santa Fe was beautiful, though Pecos National Park being closed due to the Government Shutdown was a bit of a bummer. Still, I loved every second wandering around Santa Fe’s Pueblo Revival architecture. I explored the Oldest House, the San Miguel Chapel, the New Mexico History Museum, and the gorgeous downtown area until my legs called it quits. Albuquerque was up next—a massive, sprawling city with drivers aggressive enough to make Atlanta look polite. I settled in for a long weekend, exploring Old Town, soaking in the adobe architecture, and checking out the local history museum. By early November, I hit a huge milestone: one hundred days of vanlife! It brought on a wave of reflection—where I’ve been, where I’m going, and what comes after all of this. With Albuquerque starting to feel a little stale, I decided to head south and switch things up. The next couple of days brought a mix of chores, sightseeing, and… chaos. After a stop in Elephant Butte (still makes me giggle), I attempted my first overnight at a Walmart. The following morning I woke up to a dead battery—thanks to charging my power station—and had to buy a jump starter inside the store. Then, on the way to Las Cruces, my solar panel yeeted itself off the roof of my van and disappeared into a gully. Thankfully, no one was around, and hey—at least the van can go through a car wash again. Las Cruces was quieter than expected with so many places closed, so I continued to El Paso for some outlet mall wandering and a movie. The museum I wanted to see wasn’t open, so I pointed the van south again. The long drive toward Roswell came with a major highlight: White Sands National Park. Absolutely stunning. The glowing dunes, the mountains, the empty wide-open spaces—New Mexico showed off in every direction. And as I passed through its most remote stretches, I couldn’t help but wonder what life is like out there. Beautiful? Yes. Peaceful? Definitely. But as a lifelong city person… I know I wouldn’t last a week.
