Incredibly valuable (by many measures) mature White Pine trees that are the seed source to thousands of present and future natural White Pine seedlings in openings we're creating that mimic natural disturbances. Hand felling of high quality Paper Birch with wedge and hammer precision assist. Direction of fall is determined primarily to avoid poles, saplings, and seedlings of multiple ecologically and economically valuable species we are retaining and in this case to try to damage Ironwood poles/saplings we are trying to reduce. Secondarily, the tree must be felled in a location and direction that is possible to hook to with cable skidder with a path to the landing that will similarly avoid species to be retained. This is precision work and part of a multi step process played out over decades/ centuries.
