He said that Russia would increase its military presence in the Arctic to ensure its security and national interests. The Kremlin has reopened Soviet-era bases in the region in recent years as it seeks to increase commerce via its northern sea route, which runs through Arctic waters. “It is obvious that the role and importance of the Arctic both for Russia and for the whole world is growing. But unfortunately, geopolitical competition, the struggle for positions in this region, is also intensifying,” Putin said on a visit to Murmansk, the largest city north of the Arctic Circle.
