We visited Uji, Kyoto in search of the Golden Phoenix. Kyoto is surrounded by mountains. In the ancient days, one would have to enter Kyoto through the beautiful city of Uji. Here we found the incredible Byodo-in temple. This Buddhist temple was completed in 1052. The Golden Phoenix adorns the roof of the Amaida Hall (or the Phoenix Hall) ! The Phoenix Hall is the only original building remains. The building is designated as national treasure. The image of the phoenix is currently on the 10,000 yen Japanese bank note. The Phoenix Hall is on the ten yen coin. Uji is famous for its green tea and its connection to the Tale of Genji, the first novel in the world.
