Dudley Savage BBC "As Prescribed" The last show? As Prescribed started in 1948 as a request programme for people in hospital or people that were ill or housebound. When the BBC South West Region decided to do some budget cuts in 1968, As Prescribed was deemed too expensive, the decision was made that the last show would be on 22/09/1968, and this is that complete show. What followed was amazing soon; a petition of over 43,000 names had been gathered. Marchers with banners took this petition to the Chairman of the Governors of the BBC even the Arch Bishop of Canterbury got involved at the time; this was the biggest petition and number of complaints about the removal of such a loved radio show that this was the biggest petition the BBC had received up to that point in time about taking a radio programme off the air. The programme was broadcast from the ABC /Royal Cinema Plymouth. Dudley Savage playing the Compton organ of 3-8 (9) Ranks plus the Compton organ haunting Meleotone unit he used so effectively. He knew this Compton organ so well, having been made resident organist way back in 1938 at 18 years old. After the hiatus died down, the BBC had a rethink, and "As Prescribed" came back from December 1968 but only being broadcast once a month using the Plymouth ABC Compton organ the other weeks. It became a record request studio-based programme to cut the cost down. And it ran on for a good few more years thereafter. I had the great pleasure of meeting Dudley Savage a couple of times and heard him play at several organs! I have to say he was such a super chap to talk to, just like you hear him come over in this. As Prescribed, you thought you could have known him for many years rather than just meeting him very briefly after a concert say. I also liked his style of playing. His concerts were always a joy, and you knew you were going to hear good, well-played music. I also have the first "As Prescribed" programme back in December 1968 if any of you are interested in hearing that one? Let me know in the comments. I just think he had such a lovely way of talking and reading the requests out a programme like this seems a world away from today's radio, and to think some of these older people he reads requests out for back then had been born in the Victorian era with no electricity or radio a world away from the 1960s. It took me back to another time. Again, please note this was taken from a reel to reel recording made on a mono 1960s tape recorder taped from a radio set, so as always, not the greatest of quality.
