Mosses, part of the extremely diverse Bryophyta division of the plant kingdom (Plantae) is an ancient lineage. Non-flowering and low growing, they often go unnoticed and are overlooked on the main stage of plants. They provide important services in the natural water cycle and water conservation. Florida has over 400 species of bryophytes including about 165 liverworts, 5 hornworts, and 230 species of moss. 400 species is a pretty big chunk of our flora to be overlooked so roundly! Brandon will discuss a little about hornworts and liverworts for comparison. For liverworts it's calculated that ~40% are tropical, 40% are temperate, and 10% cosmopolitan - moss species representation remains unknown. Additionally, Brandon will be happy to demonstrate to viewers on how to recognize some of the common mosses they might see in central Florida. Brandon is currently at Cameron Lab preparing his dissertation on orchid mycoheterotrophy. A Florida native from Flagler county, he graduated from the University of Florida in 2018, and jumped right into his PhD pursuit .
