When we rescue bears and bring them to sanctuary, they've often never used their natural skills. So before they go outside into their semi-wild enclosures and meet other bears, they have time and space in their dens to rediscover the skills they've never been able to use. One of those skills is foraging - and our rescued bears have so much fun sniffing out, digging around and retrieving tasty snacks! ❓ WHY ARE BUZZ AND ARMSTRONG NOT OUTSIDE❓ Bears that arrive at our sanctuaries have often spent decades, mostly their whole lives, confined to tiny cages. If they were to go outside or even into an enclosure bigger or different to what they're used to too soon, it could be detrimental. The transition from cage to den to meeting other bears to stepping outside is done slowly, in stages, and always at the bears' pace. This is the only way to build their mental and physical strength and their confidence and trust in us. While they are in quarantine cages and afterwards their dens, we give them enrichment, toys, and lots of tasty foods. We also continue to monitor them closely to ensure they are happy and comfortable. After 25 years of rescuing and rehabilitating 670+ bears, our bear care and vet teams know exactly what, how, and when a traumatised bear needs when they arrive at sanctuary.
