Sweet Science on the Farm We’re running a little experiment in our strawberry field here at the Saskatoon Farm — and the results are delicious! Using a Brix refractometer (a tool that measures natural sugar levels in fruit), we compared our freshly picked strawberries to grocery store ones. The verdict? Our strawberries measured in at 20% sugar Store-bought ones came in at just 5–6% That’s a big difference — and here’s why: Most store strawberries are picked unripe, then travel hundreds (sometimes thousands) of kilometres before reaching the shelf. That long journey means they never get a chance to develop their full flavour. Here on the farm, we don’t spray our strawberries, and we only pick them when they’re ripe and ready, which means more sweetness, more nutrients, and more real strawberry taste in every bite. That’s why it’s so important to eat local and support local.
