6.7.20 | 8:00 PM PDT | Hollywood, CA | Hollywood Blvd Estimates vary from 20,000 to 100,000 protesters took to the L.A./Hollywood streets on Sunday to demand racial reconciliation and nothing less. It was glorious. Protest organizers Black Lives Matter - L.A., rapper YG (shown at 6:43), and BLD PWR - promoters of social equity - beheld the tens and tens of thousands of demonstrators and potential voters with satisfaction: THE PEOPLE SHOWED UP TO PEACEFULLY BE HEARD. No more silence. No more tolerating injustices. The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States of America leaves no doubt about the entitlements the founders of this nation were addressing: "We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." The Declaration of Independence is right upfront in defining the guiding establishing principles for America with perfect clarity in its second paragraph as well: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men [and, in 1920, women too] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. -- That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, -- That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to [affect] their Safety and Happiness..." After the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers on 5.25.20, horrified bystanders sent live footage of the fact all over the internet. International outrage has ensued, sparking global protests from Amsterdam to Cape Town, Paris to Nairobi, from Lagos to Berlin, Auckland to Tel Aviv, Tokyo to Barcelona to Rio de Janeiro to London to Binnish, Syria, from Kingston to Mexico City, to Seoul and far beyond. Racism is destroying every nation from the inside out - and every nation sent out a desperate universal cry: NO MORE! It is a universal outcry of rage, anguish, and unwavering determination, rising up to demand justice and change, and to establish racial equality as the law of the land. Every land. The word on the street is that all of the National Guard units will be gone from California later this week; that will do a lot to ease remaining nervous tensions after a brief but chilling experience of what it's like to live in armed occupation. Local and state government officials have a huge task ahead, juggling remaining Covid-19 dangers alongside establishing sustainable human and civil rights reforms. Hopefully, cooperative citizens will be proactive and reasonably patient and sincerely willing to help hammer out credible new police policies and social programs that will ease the distresses that have racially oppressed our people beyond the breaking points.
