HM Revenue and Custom's large business tax directorate has doubled the amount of additional tax revenue it has secured from large businesses since 2021-22. Read our full report here: https://www.nao.org.uk/reports/taxing... The large business directorate takes a more hands-on approach to ensuring that the UK's largest businesses remain tax compliant, assigning a customer compliance manager to each business. The success of the directorate's work in ensuring compliance has helped HMRC to secure £15.8 billion in additional tax, which is double the amount from 2021-22. The directorate achieved a return on investment of £95 for every £1 spent on staff pay, which is four times higher than what HMRC achieves across all taxpayers. The directorate's work has also reduced the tax gap for large businesses from £7.5 billion in 2005-06 to £5.8 billion in 2023-24. The tax gap is the difference between the amount of tax that should be paid compared with what is actually paid. HMRC is now considering expanding the large business directorate's model to include smaller businesses that are complex or at high risk of non-compliance. It's important that these expansion plans include detailed analysis and a plan for monitoring the impact of any changes.
