Bhoothathankettu Dam is a scenic dam and popular tourist spot located in Ernakulam district of Kerala, near the town of Kothamangalam and about 50 Km from Kochi. The name " Bhoothathankettu" translates to Monster Fort in Malayalam, stemming from a local legend. According to folklore, demons ( Bhoothams ) attempted to dam the Periyar River to submerge the Trikkariyoor temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. However, Lord Shiva foiled their plan by making it appear as dawn approached, causing the demons to flee and abandon their work, leaving behind large, unshaped stones in the riverbed. This natural rock formation is still visible and is referred to as the " Old Bhoothathankettu". A modern dam was later constructed near this natural formation to manage the flow of the Periyar River for irrigation purposes. The area has become a popular tourist destination due to its picturesque landscape, dense forests, and the intriguing legend associated with its name.
