To celebrate Jack Rose's 100th birthday, here's a short film celebrating the man and his life. Jack Rose was born in Lowestoft on 24th January 1926 into a fishing family. He worked as a longshoreman, trawlerman, drifterman, lifeboatman, fish worker and school caretaker. His interest in the town began after he returned from service in the Second World War to discover how much Lowestoft had changed. In 1970 he began giving slideshows and talks in local venues, schools, clubs and old people’s homes for the next three decades, regularly filling the Marina Theatre and raising money for local charities. By the time Jack died in 2000 he had written 11 books on Lowestoft's history, including 'The Grit: The Story of Lowestoft's Beach Village' (1997) which was his favourite. Jack was passionate about his hometown and celebrated it with humour and heart, which made him one of Lowestoft's best-loved characters of the 20th century. Happy 100th birthday Jack!
