On November 29, the day Iran nuclear talks resumed in Vienna, The Washington Institute held a lively webinar about how the Islamic Republic’s leaders view the United States. The webinar coincided with the launch of the Institute Policy Note “Iranian Perceptions of the U.S. Soft Power Threat,” in which author Amir Toumaj argues that hardline authorities in Tehran can still agree to a deal despite their unshakeable conviction that Washington ultimately seeks regime change. Speakers included: Sanam Vakil, deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House, where she leads project work on Iran and Gulf Arab dynamics. Author of Women and Politics in the Islamic Republic of Iran: Action and Reaction (Bloomsbury, 2013), she received her PhD in international relations and economics from Johns Hopkins University. Amir Toumaj, an independent Iran researcher and cofounder of Resistance Axis Monitor, which provides coverage and analysis of Iran and its proxies. He previously worked for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and the American Enterprise Institute.
