Lesson 1 gives the "Profile of Desperate Marriages" when one of the marriage partners is fighting for emotional survival. Desperate marriages result from sin on the spouse's part such as intimidating outbursts of temper, physical or verbal abuse, failure to provide for family, sexual neglect, adultery or homosexuality, bitterness, judging motives, drunkenness, hindering the mate from serving God, etc. When this happens, the mate frequently sinks into extreme bitterness and may eventually reject both the spouse and God. The Challenges in Marriage series teaches the natural course of sin from just a beginning slip to where it completely enslaves and controls the person and inhibits love. Even then, God gives his people tremendous influence and power for correcting these situations. God even deals with "husband" abuse as he describes the odious and clamorous wife. The classes will help you understand and deal with the 24/7 character flaws and sins that are common in sexless marriages. 00:00 - Intro. 00:37 - Meaning of "Jerk." 02:59 - How Marriages Can Be Harmful. 03:33 - Three Classes of Women. 04:19 - Older Women. 06:00 - Young Brides. 06:18 - Women Outside the Church. 07:37 - Survey to Former Students. 14:22 - Learn the ABC's of Marriage - 1 Peter 3.1-2; Prov. 5.18-19; Eph. 5.33 18:19 - Four Basic Marriages. 22:42 - Different Types of Sins - 1 Cor. 5.11; 6.10; Col. 3.19. 25:19 - Profile of a Sinner (Lesson 4). 26:05 - What Happens to the Desperate Wife - Eph. 5.28; Prov. 29.9. 28:02 - Blames Herself. 30:46 - Blames Herself Even More. 32:46 - Fights for Emotional Survival. 35:08 - Depression Deepens. 37:10 - Leaves Her Husband and the Church (profile of desperate husbands in handouts). 40:44 - Look at God's Solution for Help. 42:06 - Effects of Desperate Marriages on Church. 43:30 - Wrap up! Patsy Rae Dawson has taught marriage classes based on the Bible for over fifty years. She taught Challenges in Marriage to women from all over the Seattle, Washington area in 1990 in a series of 7 one-and-a-half-hour-long classes. The classes are split for a total of 14, plus 1 bonus. Many of those women were some of Patsy’s first students that she had taught 18 years earlier. They wanted to know, “Why did some of our marriages respond to learning God’s word about love, but others did not?” Through surveys, Patsy learned that the marriages didn’t thrive because sin was being covered up in the home. Although the classes were originally taught to wives, most of the scriptures apply equally to desperate husbands dealing with unloving wives and wondering why nothing works.
