Following a 16-month investigation by the Calgary Police Service Professional Standards Section, a former Calgary police officer has been charged with breach of trust and misuse of a computer system. It is believed that between 2008 and 2023, the officer engaged in personal relationships with numerous women with whom he had initial contact through calls-for-service or police-related matters. It is alleged that the officer used police databases for a personal purpose to find and engage in further contact with the women, outside of his policing duties. The initial complaint was brought forward in July 2023. When the investigation revealed evidence in support of the allegations, the officer was suspended with pay in January 2024. The officer’s duty status continued to be assessed as the investigation progressed. He was suspended without pay in September 2024. Shortly after, the officer resigned from the Calgary Police Service. It is believed that he has since left Canada and has not returned. As a result, charges have been laid by way of warrant and the radius of the warrant has been extended to include the whole of Canada. “To the women who were impacted by this individual and to Calgarians generally, I want you to know this is a serious situation that we will never take lightly. This was a CPS officer – someone who held a position of authority, someone you should have been able to trust,” says Calgary Police Service Chief Constable Mark Neufeld. “We have zero tolerance for these behaviours by police officers and will take every measure to protect the public and to hold those who engage in these activities to full account. This behaviour is not reflective of the values of our Service, nor the good work done by the majority of our members every day.” After consultation with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, Brett SINGER, 51, is charged with one count of breach of trust and one count of misuse of a computer system. He is described as approximately 6’ tall, 210 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. A photo of SINGER is available on The City of Calgary Newsroom. Const. SINGER was a 16-year member of the Calgary Police Service prior to his resignation in September 2024. Anyone who believes they have received inappropriate contact of a personal nature by a police officer is encouraged to report such circumstances by contacting the Professional Standards Section through either the public portal on our website, or by calling 403-428-5904.
