It’s a fascinating, almost surreal juxtaposition of modern industrial might and age-old coastal life. Iran has one of the world's most extreme climate contrasts, resulting in huge temperature variations across the country. In one part, the Lut Desert has recorded some of the highest ground temperatures on Earth, while the northwestern mountain regions can experience bitterly cold winters with temperatures plummeting to -36 C}or lower. This dramatic range is due to Iran's diverse geography, encompassing high mountain ranges like the Zagros, arid inland plateaus, and coastal areas. Specifically for your trip to Assaluyeh, located on the Persian Gulf coast, you'll be experiencing the extremely hot end of this spectrum, where summer average daily high temperatures can easily exceed 40 C (104 F). During this trip (in December) we experienced over 30 degrees difference with an hour flight. Despite the limited time we had, a visit to Asalouyeh is incomplete without diving into the local culinary scene. The region’s deep connection to the sea shines through its spicy, flavourful seafood, and we made sure to try the famous dish known as KHASAK. While we expected a simple squid fish plate, what arrived was a rich, hearty, and intensely seasoned stew—a true explosion of Gulf flavours. Be warned: the southern side of Iran by the Persian Gulf loves its heat, so if you're not a fan of spice, proceed with caution! As the desert sun dipped below the horizon, Asalouyeh transformed into a breathtaking display of fire and light. The huge, fiery gas flares that dominate the skyline provide a dramatic, unmissable reminder of the city's critical role as the center of one of the planet's biggest gas fields. It is a view that encapsulates the city’s identity: a powerful convergence where the incredible beauty of nature—the meeting of mountains, desert, and Gulf—clashes with serious industrial power.
