Maiko NP - Rare Encounters With The Okapi

The okapi is extremely elusive and rarely seen. To date only one study has been conducted on its ecology and behaviour. They are threatened by poaching both for meat and for their strikingly beautiful skins. The most recent estimates suggest a population of approximately 10,000-20,000 living in the wild, though civil conflict and remoteness of their habitat has made full surveys difficult to conduct. The okapi is a unique species of forest dwelling giraffe found only in the tropical rainforests of north, central and eastern DRC.
