This video from OMG (One Minute Geography) Revision looks at a case study example of a tropical storm that occurred in 2005. Hurricane Katrina started life as a low-pressure system over the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane tracked north-west as it approached the coastline of Florida, Louisiana and New Orleans. New Orleans bore the brunt of Hurricane Katrina that reached category 5 at some points during this extreme weather event. Primary effects included the destruction of levees that were designed to cope with a category three storm-surge and this led to 80% of New Orleans being flooded. There were over 1800 deaths, 300000 homes were destroyed. Longer term, secondary effects included 3 million people being left without electricity and people had to move out of the area. The economic cost was $300 billion and immediate short-term aid was provided from the US government and from allies such as the United Kingdom. Longer term responses included levees being rebuilt to a higher standard to withstand category 4 and 5 storm surges. In order to revise this case study, you need to know when and where it happened and be able to provide at least one example of a primary effect, secondary effect, primary responses and longer-term secondary response. To develop your knowledge further you could learn a social, economic and environmental effect of this storm in order to ensure you are equipped to answer even the most challenging of exam questions.
