Sarah Lidstone, MD, PhD, Toronto Western Hospital and the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, discusses how practitioners approach the management and referral of patients with newly diagnosed functional movement disorder (FMD). She highlights the initial importance of assessing whether a patient is ready to engage in treatment — in particular, diagnostic disagreement and strong perpetuating factors like severe fatigue could suggest that a patient is not suitable for a particular treatment at that time. Dr Lidstone emphasizes that referral for treatment is a highly individualized process, with patients often benefitting from a combination of treatments, which includes motor-retraining physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and psychotherapy. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
