Filipino is used in government, education, and media, promoting national identity and unity among the Filipino people. The Chamorro language is an Austronesian language spoken by the indigenous Chamorro people of the Mariana Islands, primarily in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Influenced heavily by Spanish during the colonial period, Chamorro contains a significant number of Spanish loanwords integrated into its vocabulary. Despite this, its grammar and core structure remain distinctively Austronesian, reflecting its deep roots in the linguistic traditions of Southeast Asia and Oceania. Today, Chamorro faces challenges in preservation, as younger generations increasingly favor English. Efforts are ongoing to revitalize the language, with initiatives in education, media, and cultural activities aimed at ensuring its survival as a vital part of Chamorro identity and heritage. The Spanish influence on Filipino and Chamorro languages is profound, stemming from centuries of colonization and cultural interaction under Spanish rule. However, the extent and nature of this influence differ due to the unique histories and contexts of each culture.
